There are millions of online resources at your disposal, but sometimes it can be difficult to sift through the garbage and find the ones that offer the most (and most helpful) information. I’ve compiled some of the resources that I’ve found to be helpful so you don’t have to waste any time scouring the internet. Do you have any resources you have used that aren’t listed here? Let me know in the comments so we can check them out and get them on here for everyone else!

PERSONAL FINANCE

The Motley Fool

Hands down, my favorite financial website. They cover almost everything you could ever need to know about personal finance, investing, planning and spending. They have been so successful that they even have a couple of ETFs that you can invest in if you’re so inclined. I learned a lot about how and where to put my money by reading this site.

SmartMoney

Another great resource for the ins and outs of managing your finances. They offer a variety of different tools to compare leasing vs buying a car, life insurance policies, health care plans and credit card offers. This site can be really helpful if you’re looking for very specific info or trying to decide between to options.

EDUCATION

Cappex

Absolutely one of the coolest websites around for comparing colleges based on location, size, cost, your interests and major. They have profiles on over 3,000 colleges where you can see admission facts, majors, deadlines and student life. They also have reviews written by students at each school, as well as an index of scholarships totaling over $11 billion. You can input your demographic information to determine which scholarships you may qualify for, which is a big factor in deciding between universities.

bigfuture

This is actually a sister site of College Board that has nearly every tool you can think of for making decisions about college. You name it – which school, which major, which dorm, how to pay, which activities to do, which groups to join – they’ve got it all. You can also research careers and which majors are the most relevant for the things you’re interested in doing. This takes a lot of the confusion out of this aspect of life and is a must read.

CAREER

Glassdoor

If you’re looking for salary information for a specific job or company, look no further. They have information on over 2,600,000 companies from 4.5 million user posts. These posts include everything from salary information to user-written reviews on what it’s like to work for the company. This is a great resource to determine if the job you think you’re interested in is as great as it sounds. You can also use this as you progress in your career to see if you’re being paid as much as your peers at other companies.

Job Boards

There are too many to list them all, but there are a few that stand out from the crowd. indeed is the most efficient of these sites, aggregating info from job boards, news sites and company listings. If you would like to continue working for Uncle Sam, USA Jobs is a one-stop shop for any and all federal job listings.

NETWORKING

LinkedIn

Obviously, this is the first place you want to start reaching out to people who can help you reach your goals. I covered how to use LinkedIn to supercharge your networking here. There are a variety of tools built in to the site to help you narrow the scope of your search, as well as different ways to connect with other veterans in your field of interest. This is the best tool you can use to make connections.

Plaxo

Possibly the greatest (and simplest) concept I’ve come across. Although this one will run you $5 per month, a lot of people have found that it’s worth the small fee. It compiles all of your contact info from social media sites, cell phones and multiple email accounts into on online address book that combines the information contained in duplicates and deletes exact duplicates. This allows you to have every person’s contact info no matter where you are, and ensures you have the correct info. Definitely a good way of making sure you’re never without that one person’s email address when you need it.

I will continue to add more resources to this page as the site grows. If you think there is something that needs to be on this page, let me know in the comments!
